Mahdi Abdeljaouad

Mahdi Abdeljaouad is a retired Full Professor from the University of Tunis. He received his PhD in mathematics from the University of Washington (Seattle) in 1970. His research and teaching interests include non-commutative algebra, teaching mathematics at a distance, and mathematical education. He is particularly active in the history of Arabic mathematics and the history of mathematics teaching in Arabic/Islamic countries. He has published two critical editions of ancient Arabic mathematics manuscripts and several research papers on Arabic mathematics. He has edited five proceedings of Colloques maghrebins sur l'histoire des mathématiques arabes (1988, 1994, 2004, 2010, and 2018).

Al-Hawārī’s Essential Commentary

We give an edition and English translation of al-Hawārī’s book, together with a passage-by-passage mathematical, conceptual, and historical commentary and an introduction to Arabic arithmetic to put it in context.
